The history of Imperial Citadel:

In the past, Imperial Citadel of Thang Long is the centre of Hanoi and the Old Quarter is on the right side. Today, you can find this place is in the between of the Old Quarter and Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum. You can take a half day to explore it (morning or afternoon).

  • The imperial citadel of Thang Long: the capital city of great Viet under the Ly, Tran and Le dynasties

In 1010, King Ly Cong Uan moved the capital from Hoa Lu to Dai La and renamed it to Thang Long. The citadel of Thang Long included three walls, which provided reciprocal protection. The outermost wall was called La Thanh, the middle wall was called the Imperial Citadel, and the inner wall the Forbidden Citadel which encompassed the forbidden palaces of the king.

This Vauban-style citadel was built between 1802 - 1805, in the space formerly occupied by the Forbidden Citadel andImperial Citadel of Thang Long. It later had its size reduced and had its functions changed to become the administrative centre of Northern Citadel

The structure of the citadel:

The first area of the citadel that we can see from a distance is the Hanoi Flag Tower (it can be easy to recognize in the map). Its original was built from 1805 and was continuously used as a military post.

Doan Mon relic

Doan Mon relic is the main gate to the centre of the citadel: Kinh Thien palace relic where is considered as the core of the citadel. This stone gate was built since the 19th century and it is one of the biggest gates in Northern Vietnam. Hau Lau is a relic that besides the Kinh Thien palace and the revolutionary relic D67. Most of Vietnam militaries know that D67 was one of the most famous command centres during the Vietnam war while Cua Bac relic was a witness of the French war in Vietnam.

Adults: 30.000 VND / person / tour (1,3 $)

Vietnamese students (15 years old or above) and Vietnamese old people (60 or above): 15.000 VND

(note: student cards and identity cards must be presented upon purchase of tickets)

Children under the age of 15 and people who were of meritorious service to the country during the war are exempt from tickets.

Visiting time: All days except Monday
